Socrates and the Gift of Death
I made a film for this week’s newsletter.
Socrates once said that “Death might be the greatest human blessing”. This might seem counter-intuitive at first but when you sit with it for a moment, something opens.
Socrates believed that remembering we will die does not shrink life. It expands it. He saw that fear makes us hesitate and pretend and postpone the things that matter.
When we look at death honestly, gently, the noise falls away. We see what is real again.
So this weekend, if you have seven minutes, watch the film. Let it sit with you. Ask yourself quietly, as I did: If I accepted my mortality, what would I choose today?
Visit the Tools page for this audio meditation and other guided exercises to help you live these ideas day to day.
If this film resonated with you, please comment, like, re-stack, or share it with a friend. This work is my calling, and every gesture helps it reach more people who need it.
I’d also be really interested to know if you liked this film format.
Live happy,
Hoppy
News:
For those who dialled in, apologies about the postponement of the call with Isla Macleod. We will find another date with Isla soon.
Please join me at 4pm UK time on 8th December for a Live Video call with Scott Morgan to discuss ‘The Forgotten Art of the Death Doula’. Scott Morgan works at a global health non-profit and brings deep lived experience from the AIDS crisis, where he supported many friends at the end of life long before he knew the word ‘doula’. He later trained as an end-of-life doula, serves on the board of the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance, and is now helping bring doula services to New York City through Present for You. You will receive an email alert to join before the call, but here is the link too.
