I think you've pitched the look of mortality just right. He clearly looks like death, but isn't frightening. Which sits nicely with the point you're making.
I wonder if the style of your interaction with mortality could be a bit more distinct? With mortality akin to that of a master or sage, and you as the student, learning, making mistakes, exploring, and asking all the questions we might be afraid to ask.
